Malashock Dance’s first performance with work by our new Artistic Director Christopher K. Morgan, side-by-side with work by our Founding Director John Malashock. An electric evening of dance looking at relationships, obstacles, challenges, and what might be waiting for us on the other side of struggle.

PROGRAM:

Opening the program will be Morgan’s 2014 work Inconstancy, a look at relationships and how the grass always seems to be greener on the other side. This funny and poignant work, praised by the Washington Post as “a fast paced kinetic charge – that has emotional content, too”, features an original score by violinist/composer David Schulman.

Drawing from a range of some of his most beloved duets, Exquisite Duels highlights John Malashock’s profound affection for narrative dance. The essence of human connection unfolds through mesmerizing choreography, weaving tales of star-crossed lovers and the intricate dynamics of siblings. With a masterful blend of tension, humor, and raw intensity, this work is a poignant reflection of our own experiences.

The evening will close with the world premiere of Over, Under, Through. Morgan has been ruminating on the immense weight we are all carrying in the current state of the world. How do these sustained burdens impact us? What extreme lengths do we go to in order to work our way out from under them? Can we climb over such immense obstacles? And what is on the other side? These questions spur movement metaphors that will stretch the dancers as they climb over and under, to get through to JOY.
