The Ride:Malashock@30 is coming together beautifully thanks to our dedicated dancers, staff, designers, and of course, the one and only John Malashock. It is both thrilling and challenging to bring a production from the initial idea all the way to the stage. I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to connect with you, share our work with you, and provide a truly unique opportunity to experience Malashock Dance in it's landmark 30th Season. I love when I hear the same comment over and over from my dancers. “I’m really looking forward to getting back into the studio!”

We started rehearsal this week, for our next big show, THE RIDE: Malashock@30, and there is already a great combination of hard work and fun in the studio atmosphere. The next six weeks will be intense and challenging in terms of creativity, deepening expressiveness, refining details, and need to run things a million times to get work ready to share with you. By the way, I love that the French word for rehearsal is ‘repetition’ (said with a thick French accent).

Rehearsal for a dance show is a special time. A bond is formed between the dancers; trust becomes critical; and the healthy sense of competition and showing off fuels the process toward its end goal. It is almost as rewarding as performing the work onstage for the audience.

TEACHER HIGHLIGHT: JOSHUA ROBERT (ADULT HIP HOP)

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Joshua began figure skating at the age of six. He continued to compete for twelve years throughout the province of Ontario. After graduating from Eastwood Collegiate for the Performing Arts, with majors in Dance, Drama, and Visual Art, he joined Royal Caribbean and completed five contracts on several of their luxury cruise liners.

Between cruise ship contracts he competed on So You Think You Can Dance Canada where he was one of the top 100 finalists, choreographed for various competitive dance teams and worked with stylists and television producers on various projects.

Joshua finally made the move to Los Angeles in 2011, where he signed with MSA, worked for Stiletto Entertainment as a Show Director, choreographed countless viral youtube videos, huge live events, and international tours. Joshua relocated to San Diego in 2016 where he teaches dance and group fitness at FIT, runs monthly burlesque workshops, owns a juicing company, and sells works from his abstract art line.
