For more than four decades, Baza used his voice advocating for San Diego’s artistic and cultural community at the local, state and national levels. He served on countless panels, boards and commissions, including the National Endowment for the Arts, California Association of Local Arts Organizations, Chicano Federation of San Diego County, National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, San Diego Community Foundation and Diversionary Theatre.

Dear Friends,

It is with a great deal of sorrow that I honor and say a very fond goodbye to Larry Baza, a big-hearted friend and tireless champion of the arts in San Diego. Larry passed away recently from Covid-19 and any of us who knew him feel the vastness of the hole this leaves in our community. In the thirty-three years I knew Larry, I always felt better about our world after talking with him. Without fail, I felt encouraged as an artist and validated in the belief that the arts play a vital role in society. He just had a gift that way, and I will miss him deeply. If there is an Arts Council in heaven, I hope they make Larry the Chairperson.

Love,

John Malashock, Artistic Director

THE BRIDGE

Choreographers John Malashock and Tristian Griffin will interweave their experiences, perspectives, and choreographic styles to form a cohesive, but contrasting, artistic narrative through original dance and music. Both will share equally in the conception and creation of THE BRIDGE, which will be set on members of both Malashock Dance (San Diego) and Tristian Griffin Dance Company (Kansas City).

In a world of polarizing transitions, the characters of this dance drama are forced into revealing what lies between opposing perspectives. Perspectives arraying from political and generational differences, to starkly contrasting life stages and experiences. The participants must confront themselves, in an effort to balance their need to be heard, but also to understand different points of view. As THE BRIDGE unfolds, so will the characters’ decisions whether to pull together or draw further apart. Will they find a way across their deep divides, or remain forever on opposite shores? Will they be able to let their differences become water under the bridge?

Welcome to our newest instructor!

Janine Montag is joining our faculty as the Modern I (Ages 10-17) instructor. She began her artistic journey as a competitive gymnast and continued her investigation of movement by attending the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts. While at SDSCPA Janine had the amazing opportunity to perform in Donald McKayle’s choreography “Songs of the Disinherited” and this experience was the catalyst for her application and later acceptance into the UCI Dance Department where she performed in McKayle’s Etude Ensemble for 4 years. She graduated with a double B.F.A in Dance Choreography and Performance with an emphasis in Business Management. After graduation she was invited into Diavolo’s Institute Company where she performed and taught in K-12 schools in Los Angeles. She has danced for companies such as Not Man Apart, SíZa, and The Hubbard Collective. She now dedicates herself to arts education and teaches PE/Dance full-time at Chula Vista Learning Community Charter School, digitally for Teatro San Diego, and serves as education and outreach coordinator of the board for The Hubbard Collective. She is very excited to begin her journey with Malashock Dance.
