Dear Friend,

Over the past month, Malashock Dance’s SD NeuroDance program has received the recognition it truly deserves—with wonderful press coverage and growing public attention. While we often hear from the brilliant artists who bring projects to life through performance and choreography, it’s less common to hear from those of us behind the scenes about why we choose the programs we do—and what keeps us inspired.

That’s why I was so honored to speak with Grant Oliphant and Crystal Page on the Prebys Foundation’s Stop & Talk podcast, which explores the evolving landscape of San Diego through the lens of community, creativity, and purpose. In our conversation, I had the opportunity to share my personal journey in dance, the values that drive Malashock Dance, and why SD NeuroDance—now in its exciting pilot year—means so much to me and to our organization.

You can read more about the program in this feature article from the Union-Tribune and support SD NeuroDance here.

Thank you, and I hope you’ll take a moment to listen!

Warmly,

Molly Puryear

Executive Director

SEED: Call for Choreographers

SEED

SEED invests in the San Diego creative economy by commissioning new short form works from local choreographers to be staged on Malashock Dance’s professional company of dancers and presented in a mixed bill performance in the Malashock Black Box Studio Theater. Malashock Dance produces the annual SEED concert as part of our mission to illuminate dance as an invaluable part of the human experience, fostering a hub where artists come together to create new work and connect with audiences. Our vision is to engage the community in discovering the wide variety of San Diego-based dance artists who are poised to share their creative voices; demonstrate leadership; and fulfill their artistic vision in collaboration with Malashock Dance & Company.

Malashock Dance will commission up to six choreographers based in the San Diego region. In alignment with our values of passion, excellence, equity, and inclusivity, Malashock Dance is committed to uplifting artistic voices that reflect our diverse San Diego community.

Fall Youth Class Registration Opens July 7

The Fall session of classes begins August 18, and registration with an early bird discount opens July 7!

Snag your spot early to lock in the discounted rate and to guarantee your dancer's spot in their favorite class.

Not sure what class to pick? Join us the week of July 28th for Open House week and try any class you want for free!

Danza Moderna in July (ages 18+)

Join Araceli Carrera for Danza Moderna Tuesdays 7:00-8:30pm during the month of July!

The rhythm that ignites the all levels danza class with Araceli explores movement that celebrates and invites the presence of energy versus effort. Listening to our bodies as we navigate class is key and making accommodations is encouraged. All levels means that the movement will have a variety of interpretations (choice making); alternating from standing or floor-work, locomotor or non locomotor, tempo/levels/space will be shared diversely so that all dancers can feel at ease yet challenged in a way that activates their connection and artistry to the movement.

The Morning After

Directed by Erica Buechner
Choreographed by Blythe Barton, Erica Buechner, Bradley Lundberg, and Michael Mizerany

The Morning After is the third in a series of movement performances in the Art Produce Gallery - following the food and drink themes of Feast on This (2017) and SAUCED (2022). The storefront gallery allows for unconventional presentation opportunities for artists and unexpected art encounters for viewers. The Morning After is no exception!
