Dear Friends, In the performing arts, Summer is its own animal. It is not connected with either the end of the Winter/Spring Season, nor to a new Fall Season. It tends to be a time for festivals and workshops and special projects and travel and arts-specific intensive training. At Malashock Dance, we are keeping more than busy this summer. We just wrapped up our two-week pre-professional intensive, and start in on our YMCA dance camps, teen intensive, adult & youth classes, and our Open House on August 27. The professional company won’t be back in rehearsal till mid-August. Our dancers seem to be spread far and wide at the moment, absorbing new experiences, which they will add to their quivers of artistry. All of which makes for exciting reunions at the end of Summer. There is anticipation of re-gathering to start in on new projects with a renewed sense of vigor, as if fueled by energy absorbed from the long Summer sun. The break from the regular season routine is welcome, but reminds us that our usual day-to-day efforts are clearly in service of the art form we so dearly love. While Summer is hardly a time of rest, it allows us the space to plan, reflect, and plot new pathways. It is a crucial part of the cycle – just a little more fun!
