Dear Friend,

We are filled with anticipation and gratitude for the various programs happening throughout this month. I hope you will join us for a FREE performance in our studio this Friday from 6:30 - 7:15 pm, showcasing work developed during the San Diego Airport Performing Arts Residency Program.

SD NeuroDance is a dream come true here at Malashock Dance. Thanks to generous support from The Conrad Prebys Foundation Healing Through the Arts Grant, Malashock Dance is working with Lexii Regina Alcaraz, a dancer, movement artist, and physical therapist who created and coordinates the many aspects of this groundbreaking program. SD NeuroDance is so much more than a dance class—it’s a space where individuals living with neurological diseases can connect with their caregivers, loved ones, and our team of dancers and physical therapists. Through tailored, diagnosis-specific classes, we create a safe environment for participants to experience the joy and healing power of movement, whether they’re living with Parkinson’s Disease, Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Cord Injuries, or Sclerotic Diseases like MS and ALS. It’s been a gift to watch this program grow and to see firsthand how dance brings people together in the most profound ways. These classes remind us of what’s possible when we move in community, support one another, and embrace the healing energy of dance.

Tickets for our upcoming production of Seed are also just a click away! We hold this program close to our hearts. Formerly known as EveryDay Dances, Seed will bring six new works from local choreographers to life in our intimate Malashock Black Box Studio Theater. This is more than just a performance—it’s a celebration of San Diego’s incredible talent, diversity, and creative spirit.

We hope these projects inspire you as much as they inspire us. Thank you for being a part of our community and for helping make these projects a reality. Your continued support means the world to us.

With love and gratitude,

Molly Puryear, Executive Director

SD NEURODANCE LAUCHES CLASSES

Project Creator and Coordinator: Lexii Regina Alcaraz & Malashock Dance

San Diego NeuroDance is a collaboration between adults living with neurological diseases, their caregivers or loved ones, physical therapists, and dancers. By providing symptom-based and diagnosis-based classes, SD NeuroDance creates a safe and specialized environment that allows persons living with disability to experience the joy of dance with their loved ones.

We believe in the power of dance to bring people together. Come spend an hour with your loved ones learning new ways to move and groove. Dance teachers and physical therapists will be there to keep you safe throughout the process.

HELP US TAKE THE COMPANY TO WASHINGTON D.C.!

Artistic Director Christopher K Morgan secured a residency for the further development of The Dulling Effect at Dance Place in Washington DC to take place in June 2025. This residency comes with a $10,000 stipend that will PARTIALLY pay dancer salaries and travel costs.

Our goal is to raise an additional $10,000 to cover costs. We're over 80% of the way there! Can you help us close the gap?

(re)Connect with Rachel Torres

Join Faculty Member Rachel Torres on Wednesdays from 7-8:30 in February

Rachel's class will begin with a structured full body center warm-up before transitioning into more expansive movement and phrase work across the floor where dancers are encouraged to take up space and find the full expansiveness of their bodies. Class will end with musicality based choreography where there is room to be both precise and to make your own artistic choices in a friendly, non-judgmental environment. Rachel's goal is to allow for a space that fosters creativity, love and community, and allows each dancer to get what they need each week.

TAKE CLASS WITH SEED CHOREOGRAPHERS

Some of the Seed choreographers are taking over Open Company Class in the coming weeks!

Open Company Class invites dancers of all levels to join the Company Dancers as they prepare for a day of rehearsals. Students are asked to bring their entire selves into the class and express themselves without inhibition. Physical tasks throughout the class emphasize smooth transitions in and out of the floor, clear use of the legs, grounded balance, expansive stretch, and abandoned upper bodies. These physical qualities all stand on a foundation of community values that balance listening to oneself with acutely tuning into the ensemble.

  • Feb 19 10:00-11:15am – Anna Medina
  • March 12 10:00-11:15am– Bernard Brown
