Dear Friend, In our 37-year history, I have never had to write a letter quite like this one. But the stakes are high and I must share our precarious situation. As the Founding Director of Malashock Dance, I’ve had the extraordinary honor of watching this Company grow from a dream into a cornerstone of San Diego’s cultural landscape. I couldn't be prouder of the way we have transferred the artistic leadership to Christopher K. Morgan. Over the years, we have performed hundreds of original works and touched countless thousands of lives with our unique artistic collaborations. But today, I write to you with an urgent and critical message. This Spring, we are at risk of not being able to produce our major annual performance, CULTIVATE - the show that brings our dancers, collaborators, and audiences together in a powerful celebration of creativity. It is scheduled to be performed at The Joan (Cygnet Theatre’s new theater at Liberty Station). Due to significant cuts in federal, state, and local arts funding, and a sharp increase in our basic operating costs, plus debt incurred to weather the Covid pandemic, we are facing a critical financial shortfall. Quite simply: we need your help to keep the curtain from falling on the Malashock Dance Company after 37 extraordinary seasons in San Diego. Our Spring Show is the heart of our season. Losing this performance would mean silencing the creative voice of the Company and have a major impact on the future of Malashock Dance. We have been through rough times in the past but, for the first time, I truly fear this may happen. We are calling on those of you who have been moved, inspired, and energized by Malashock Dance to help us raise $35,000 to sponsor CULTIVATE. Whether you can underwrite part of the production, sponsor a dancer, or give a one-time gift, your contribution will directly determine whether this show can go on. If Malashock Dance has ever made you feel something profound—whether as an audience member, student, supporter, or fellow artist—now is the time to stand in support with us and contribute all that you can. Please, help us save the Spring Show. With gratitude and hope, John Malashock Founding Director Malashock Dance |
